Background and context
Why are we doing personalised learning and developing PLPs?
Research from the United Kingdom and the USA indicates that personalising learning for students is instrumental in addressing persistent gaps in educational achievement between different social, ethnic and cultural groups.
Central to personalising learning is a commitment to using assessment to inform the design and delivery of targetted teaching. International research has demonstrated that using assessment for learning strategies produces significant learning gains for all students. Another factor contributing to the achievement of all students is the establishment of appropriate learning goals. Teaching and learning strategies which enable the achievement of these learning goals is also key.
PLPs are recognised as an effective tool for ensuring implementation of personalised approaches to learning as they require a dynamic process of engagement rather than a static approach to their implementation.

Why is this approach being focussed on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students?
The Federal and State Governments are committed to Closing the Gap in educational achievement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Educators recognise the potential of personalising learning for students to improve their learning outcomes.
Personalising learning is not just for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. A number of schools have developed PLPs for all students as they realise the importance of goal setting, explicit teaching and regular progress tracking as tools to improve the learning gains for all students.
